Steering-in-the-Loop

Put real steering systems to the test

The development of steering systems requires intensive, continuous testing in order to keep pace with the constantly increasing complexity, meet customer requirements and, at the same time, maintain the brand-specific signature. With our Steering-in-the-Loop test system, any modern steering system along with its EPS ECU can be tested with reproducible accuracy and without risk. Customers can decide whether they want to invest in the purchase of a test system or rent one at the Karlsruhe site.

What is Steering-in-the-Loop?

Steering:

  • Stands for all types of steering systems, from conventional steering systems to steer-by-wire systems including front-axle, rear-axle and all-wheel steering

in-the-Loop:

  • Refers to both open-loop and closed-loop test procedures for development and validation of steering systems
  • Full testing of all types of steering systems with virtual test driving on the test bench
  • Other extensions such as Driver-in-the-Loop, Hands Off Clutch, etc. can be added

Who benefits from
Steering-in-the-Loop?

  • From OEMs to suppliers, development engineers for steering systems can use our test system individually
  • Chassis developers as well as users involved in the development of advanced driver assistance systems and automated functions
  • Companies can also rent a test system (Steering-in-the-Loop) at the headquarters in Karlsruhe and carry out their tests on site

How can Steering-in-the-Loop
be used?

  • Testing of real steering systems including steering wheel, steering column, steering rack and EPS ECU in open- and closed-loop maneuvers
  • Optimization of control units leveraging function, calibration, fail-safe and performance tests
  • Validation of the control units for safe driving with our Fail Safe Tester
  • Execution of comprehensive variance tests for system optimization
  • Testing automated driving functions through simple integration of electric steering system components
  • Accompanying parameter studies for various vehicle properties with the help of multi-body dynamic chassis and high-fidelity tire models (for example CDTire, Real-time Tire)

How can Steering-in-the-Loop
be expanded?

Driver-in-the-Loop

  • Subjective evaluation of the steering system
  • Haptic perception of steering performance with the Driver-in-the-Loop extension using real steering inputs from a test driver
  • Easy switching between steering robot (standard mode) and driver platform (Driver-in-the-Loop mode)

Hands Off Clutch

  • Objective evaluation of the steering system
  • Optional execution of hands-off as well as hands-on maneuvers with the Hands Off Clutch
  • Specially developed for mimicking the drivers’ behavior: when drivers take their hands off the steering wheel, the system takes over control again either via servomotor controller or using the mechanical clutch
  • These maneuvers are performed to evaluate the steering behavior of vehicles and to test automated driving functions
